About a year ago, I stumbled upon a course in breathing techniques at my gym. It was held by the breathing instructor, public speaker, entrepreneur and best-selling author Anette Aarsland. She spoke about breathing in a way I had never heard before, and it really made a lot of sense!
“Breathe well, and you can reduce stress, release tension, increase concentration, lower blood pressure, increase metabolism, enhance endurance, improve the spirit and much much more”
- Anette Aarsland
What is the problem with how we breathe?
She explains how most people these days tend to breathe in too much oxygen, and that makes the CO2 levels in our blood too low. At the same time, we don’t move our bellies when we breathe. Over time, with learning to hold our stomachs in, wearing tight clothes, we stopped breathing with our bellies, as we did as babies.
How can we breathe properly?
Anette explains how we, by breathing properly, can give our main organs a good massage. By breathing and moving our whole diaphragm, the heart will even move a little, and the colon will move so that we can relieve constipation.
What she wants us to do is this: breathe out with your mouth while saying “sssss” and moving your belly towards your spine. Then, let go, and let the air flow naturally inwards again. The focus is on the exhale, and the inhale comes automatically.
