This is a topic that we are highly engaged in, and that we share a lot of info on through our social media channels like instagram and our podcast.
A few weeks ago, a new article came out on the topic of food emissions. People ask us why we don’t strive to eat local, and how we can say that a tropical mango is more sustainable than Norwegian beef.
Where do the largest part of emissions from food come from?
Well, that’s because the research on the topic is pretty clear. It’s not the transportation of the food that causes the emissions, its the production. For most foods, the largest part of the emissions come from land use (green) and farm processes (brown). Farm processes include the use of fertilizers, and the production of methane in cattles’ stomach.
In general, CO2 emissions from most plant-based products are as much as 10-50 times lower than most animal based products.
What about transport?
For most foods, transport account for less than 10% of the emissions (the red).
